Victoria Veligodsky: What challenges made you search for this kind of software?

Larry Phipps: I needed the ability to share radio transceivers from multiple applications/users at the same time. I wanted to transparently provide the necessary services within my software with a minimum of effort or need for writing specific code to provide a custom service. In other words, I needed a simple plug in solution to a complex problem.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did get to know about Serial Port ActiveX and Virtual Serial Port ActiveX controls by Eltima Software?

Larry Phipps: I started with a web search and found several web sites, including Eltima. I read the information on the Eltima site, as well as the case studies, and then tried demo versions of the two ActiveX controls: Serial Port ActiveX and Virtual Serial Port ActiveX.

Eltima's support manager Janna Chesly was very helpful with answers, and also provided me with a very useful comparison matrix. This influenced my decision greatly.

Victoria Veligodsky: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing Eltima COM port solutions? Why did you prefer our controls?

Larry Phipps: Yes, I tried two other similar products... I found some things in each that I liked, but only Eltima's ActiveX controls had everything I needed for both Serial and Virtual COM Port support in a consistent, extensive package.

Victoria Veligodsky: Please, describe how you are using our ActiveX controls now.

Larry Phipps: I am using your controls to provide multiple connections to a serially controlled radio transceiver from multiple applications through the use of Virtual COM Ports. By using the ActiveX controls, I was able to condition the data flowing between serial and virtual ports to eliminate collisions from packets from multiple applications so that full bi-directional communications between each application and the radio is possible.

I was also able to intercept repetitive commands so that they would not be passed to the radio, but responded to from my application directly. This greatly reduces unnecessary traffic to the radio allowing all applications faster response.

I found the controls to be easy for my users to set up, and very stable.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did you benefit from using Eltima solution?

Larry Phipps: In addition to providing a unique solution to my customers, I found that at least one other manufacturer uses Eltima drivers, minimizing the possibility of conflicts between dissimilar drivers.

Eltima is becoming well known as the premier supplier of virtual COM port drivers, and that bolsters my position as a premier supplier of software to my sector of the communications industry.
