Company Information: Navsync was established in 2003 as a part of the Connor Winfield Corporation with expertise in the design and manufacture of GPS modules and integrated products. Now they have a good knowledge of the timing markets and use the experience of their parent company to assist their customers in developing suitable products for their applications. Michelle Farrell: What challenges made you search for this kind of software? Radu Toma: Currently we feel the need for a robust serial communication utility tool. As part of our work we are building a GPS/GPRS tracker based on a Telit GPRS modem and we needed a tool for uploading scripts on the device. We have noticed that if an error occurs in this stage the whole application crashes and a lot of time is spent in investigating what went wrong. Our primary goal was to find a product that is easy to use and that can be deployed easily in the lab or on the manufacturing floor for production purposes. Michelle Farrell: How did get to know about Advanced Serial Port Terminal by Eltima Software? Radu Toma: We searched for similar products on the Internet. After finding Advanced Serial Port Terminal, we have noticed the 14 days trial period which is a great feature. Afterwards we have installed it on several machines for evaluation purposes. We have noticed that the product was working smoothly on different machines, some of which are dating as early as 2003 and having different configurations. Michelle Farrell: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing Eltima solution? Why did you prefer our product? Radu Toma: Yes, we have tried several products. Using first of them we have come to realize that it's not good enough when it comes to serial communication as it claims to be. Connection issues made us realize that we need a different communication tool. Another one was "moody" meaning that sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't which is unacceptable. Other available freeware serial communication utilities are great for setting up serial communications but when sending large quantities of data over the serial line they crash. Then, we tried Eltima's Advanced Serial Port Terminal and realized that it completely satisfies all our needs. Working stably and being very easy to use it appeared to be perfect for us. Michelle Farrell: Please, describe how you are using Advanced Serial Port Terminal now. Radu Toma: Right now we use Advanced Serial Port Terminal as part of our GPS/GPRS development and hopefully manufacturing process. The technicians found it a very easy to use tool and they were able to employ it straight away. Michelle Farrell: How did you benefit from using Eltima solution?
Radu Toma: Having a tool that simplifies the serial communication and uploading of files on target devices is most important. Adding robustness to the application is critical. This eliminates time taken for debugging an application and gives us confidence that the transfer is correct.
