Heard about Dropbox Business Smart Sync? We bet you did, everyone seems to be talking about it these days. This feature allows users to view files and folders stored on the cloud from your desktop. They are displayed along with the contents of your hard drive and indicated with special icons. The feature is actually not new, it was introduced a while ago as Project Infinite for select customers, it’s just it’s been made available recently to all Dropbox Business teams.
Files and folders stored on the cloud remain there until you decide to double-click and open them. The moment you click on a folder or file, it syncs to your hard drive automatically. Once you finish working with a document or folder, you can send it back to the cloud – thus precious space on your hard drive does not get wasted.
You can access documents stored online via macOS Finder, even if you do not have the latest version of the operating system installed – it is part of the Dropbox for Business suite.
Similar solution for Mac users
There are rumors that sometime in the future individual users can benefit from Dropbox Smart Sync too, we do not know however when it is going to happen. The good news is that you can use similar functionality with the help of CloudMounter. This Dropbox client enables you to map Dropbox as network drive so you can easily browse through its contents, you can also use the app as Dropbox uploader and share Dropbox folder. It is possible to link multiple Dropbox accounts to your Mac and switch between them whenever required; this makes your hard drive and network storage capacity practically unlimited. The files and folders get copied to your Mac only when you decide to open them – you can work with Dropbox as network drive directly from Mac.
