This is one of those case studies that make us feel a little bit envious :) Hendrik Onnes from Amsterdam, who sailed about 45000 miles, describes how he uses Serial Splitter while traveling all over the world.
Sailing the world with Serial Splitter
Hendrik Onnes worked in the IT Business consulting in ERP systems. He has been sailing ever since his childhood and it has become his passion. He sailed about 45,000 miles over the last 12 years which is about 2 times around the globe.
Alex Taylor: What challenges made you search for the software of this kind?
Hendrik Onnes: I do a lot of offshore racing. For that racing I need my instrument data on my PC for navigation, route planning, analysis and gathering weather forecasts.
On my yacht we do the navigation on a PC which is connected to a GPS and other navigation instruments. The data from the navigation instruments needs to be shared with several applications running on my PC.
I cannot link more than one application to one data source. Therefore I have been looking for solution to distribute the data to more than one navigation program. Using Eltima software I am able to split COM-Port into several virtual COM-Ports. From these virtual COM-Ports the individual navigation programs can retrieve their information.
Alex Taylor: How did you get to know about Serial Splitter by Eltima?
Hendrik Onnes: I have been looking on the Internet for solutions and tried many of them but they did not solve my problem. Until I found Eltima which enabled me to create virtual COM-Ports. Using these virtual COM-Port all my navigation software can get their needed data.
Alex Taylor: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing Eltima solution? Why did you prefer our product?
Hendrik Onnes: I tried other software but they either did not work or were not compatible with my system(32bit in stead of 64bit).
Alex Taylor: Please, describe how you are using our product now.
Hendrik Onnes: I receive the data on a COM-Port. That COM-Port I split in several virtual ones that I link to the individual navigation programs.
Alex Taylor: How did you benefit from using Eltima solution?
Hendrik Onnes: If I were not able to split the COM-Port into more virtual ones I would have to buy extra redundant instruments and connect them to the PC.
