Contemporary cloud storage trends
The last few years saw a rapid development of cloud storage services, and 2016 was no exception. It is absolutely certain that the growth of cloud data storage will continue further. What does 2017 have in store for us? What do we expect from cloud computing technologies in the near future? What are the latest data storage industry trends and how long will they continue?
At the closing of 2016 a number of experts voiced their opinions on cloud storage trends, so why don’t we hear them out?
Forrester research group says that the global cloud evolution will be driven by Chinese companies. According to them, enterprises moving away from large and costly private cloud suites is one of the most important cloud trends.
David Linthucum, Senior VP, Cloud Technology Partners, expects the security and performance to remain the major concerns for cloud service providers.
Kevin L. Jackson, Independent Technology Thought Leader – IBM, too highlights the security concern. He adds that standardization and automation in the industry will be cruicial for the information security
Ofer Gadish, CEP & Co-Founder, CloudEndure, expects enterprises to avoid using a single vendor. Instead they will try to adopt more widespread functionalities, he says, and it’s the same security problem that underlies this trend.
Dave Raffo and a number of experts from searchstorage.techtarget.com think that cloud-to-cloud backup, i.e. enterprises copying data stored on one cloud service to another cloud, will go big this year. Not only for security, but economic reasons too. They also foresee container technology to advance in the key areas such as data protection, persistent storage consumption and portability.
What do data storage technology trends mean to us?
Considering that cloud storage services are nowadays many, and your data security is the primary concern, perhaps it is better not to put all eggs in one basket and store your data on several clouds instead. Accessing and managing it in several locations is not a problem if you have CloudMounter by Eltima. This application allows you to mount cloud storage as local drive on your Mac. CloudMounter supports all popular clouds – Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, Amazon S3 and Dropbox.
Unlike native applications of these services such as OneDrive Mac Client or Google Drive Mac Client, CloudMounter does not force you to duplicate data in a dedicated local folder and online. You thus get to save your precious storage space. Files and folders get copied to your Mac only when you choose to open them in the cloud.
