Google Drive is one of the most popular cloud storage services today, and it is no wonder – the 15 Gb storage space comes for free along with a Gmail account, and you can use it across devices. With all the benefits the service offers, it also has certain shortcomings typical to any cloud storage provider – Google Drive data security being the first and foremost issue.

However there are certain things you can do to strengthen your Google Drive data protection.

Use a strong password


This will help you improve not only the safety of your Google Drive data but all services Google – Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, etc. You can use an app to help you generate a password, else, try on your own – it can be fun, as long as you do not forget it afterwards. They say, a good password should be at least 16 characters, and you gotta use uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters.

Use two-factor authentication


Enabling this feature means that to log into your account you first have to enter your login credentials, then a short code received on your registered phone number or another email box or Google authentication app. Thus to reach your Google account one needs to have access to your phone, email or Google account.

Pre-encrypt your data


With plenty of cloud encryption solutions around, the question is no more “to encrypt or not to encrypt?” but “what is the best way to do it?” In our opinion, client-side encryption works the best, i.e. only you can unlock your cloud data. Unfortunately, Google Drive encryption is done from the server side, i.e. it means that the decryption key remains with the service provider. If you are not comfortable with it, we suggest pre-encrypting files before uploading them to Google Drive. There is plenty of decent cloud encryption software you can use.
