Laboratory Information System Software - Virtualize Serial Port

A laboratory information management system (LIMS) is a software-based system used for improving lab’s operational efficiency. LIMS serves for automating workflows and simplifying the process of tracking specimens and associated data.

Thanks to its flexible architecture, a dedicated lab management software can meet a variety of technical demands. The primary aim of LIMS software developers is to create an easy configurable system able to support a wide range of lab instruments.

Lab devices data redirection challenge

Communications between complex lab equipment are usually based on serial connections. To optimize laboratory operations, lab experts rely on special laboratory information system software able to access serial interfaces remotely. Working over the network, LIMS software redirects data from remote serial devices to a single lab database. To make this possible, the software needs to support a complex port virtualization technology. It is a dedicated port redirection technology that allows lab software to receive COM port data, convert it to TCP/IP data packets and forward it to any client computer regardless of its physical location.

Best solution for LIMS connections virtualization

Serial Port Virtualization Technology seems to be the most efficient solution in this case. With the technology, you can provide any client machine with an unlimited number of virtual COM ports. That means, any lab instrument can connect to a remote client computer via a virtual serial interface. This way all data sent by various lab equipment can be collected in a single laboratory database for further analysis and research.

Serial Port Virtualization Technology
What’s more, integrated into LIMS software, the technology lets emulate any COM port peripheral thus making it easier for lab specialists to diagnose and prevent problems that may occur in lab communication system.

Integration of Serial Port Technology into LIMS software offers multiple advantages:

  1. Serial Port Virtualization Technology significantly improves LIMS software functionality by adding the ability to manage any serial port instrument remotely.
  2. With the technology, providers of lab data management software get the chance to cover new market segments and attract new customers.
  3. Serial Port Technology is compatible with all popular OSes and can be easily integrated in any industry-specific solution.
Integrated into a software-based temperature controller (written in C# on Windows 10 OS), Serial Port Virtualization allows emulating any physical serial device (e. g. Eurotherm 3216) which has an RS232 port. Now the controller can emulate various COM port equipment even when operated by other software.

A laboratory information management solution has a central server accessed from several thousand workstations via Terminal Services or Citrix. The workstations have laboratory devices attached to them. Serial Port Virtualization Technology is used for better integration between these devices and the central LIMS instance running on the terminal server.

Developers of RS232 chromatographs use the technology to make the machines available for remote access over the network. Serial Port Virtualization Technology allows converting serial signals of chromatographs into network protocol data.
