Move your Firefox and Thunderbird Profiles into Сlouds

Firefox and Thunderbird Profiles into Сlouds

Mozilla profile is a special folder where your user data is stored. This includes Firefox bookmarks, Firefox settings, downloads and browsing history, passwords, site-specific preferences, search engines, personal dictionary, autocomplete history, cookies, etc. So if something happens to the browser, you can go to the profile folder and restore Firefox preferences in a couple of clicks.

Similarly Mozilla’s mail client – Thunderbird, keeps your local mail, account settings and the toolbar in a separate folder.

Profile folders allow you to customize the web-browser and mail client on any computer in no time, so if you keep them online, you can download it anywhere anytime and apply the same settings on another computer and device. To move profile folder of Firefox/ Thunderbird to a cloud you will need CloudMounter.

This is how to move your profile:

  1. Install CloudMounter and mount a cloud storage service of your choice on your computer. CloudMounter supports Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive and Amazon S3.

  2. Locate profile folders on your Mac:

    • Look up Mozilla profile in Macintosh:
      HD/Users//Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/"profile folders"

    • For Thunderbird profile go to Macintosh:
      HD/Users//Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/"Profile name"
Locate profile folders on your Mac

  3. Drag-and-drop the profile folders to the cloud. Profile folders in the cloud

  4. Close Firefox/ Thunderbird.

  5. Execute the following commands in Terminal:

    • To launch Firefox profile manager:
      Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin –profilemanager

    • Profile manager Thunderbird:
      Applications/Thunderbird app/Contents/MacOS/thunderbird-bin –profilemanager

  6. Click ‘Create Profile’, enter a name for it. Creating Profile

  7. Click ‘Choose Folder’ and specify a Firefox profile path on the mounted cloud disk (see step 3), same for Thunderbird profile location. Choosing folder

  8. Confirm creating profile and launch Firefox/Thunderbird.

Now, you can copy Thunderbird profile, copy Firefox profile and use them on any Mac, any device – you just need to specify their location on a cloud disk. Before launching the application make sure that CloudMounter is launched and the cloud disk on which Firefox/ Thunderbird profile folder is located is mounted. Enjoy browsing Internet and checking your mails in a familiar environment.
